Strategic negative messages require special attention to content, structure, context, and tone. Objective is to preserve goodwill and ensure recipient finishes reading the message and accepts the news without feeling bitter or hostile. Deliver bad news 2/3 of the way in message. Best news: start with part of the message that represents best news. Apology: do it briefly, early, and sincere. Cite reader or other benefits if plausible. Show the matter was treated seriously and fairly. Sandwich the bad news between other sentences. Don"t let the bad news begin or end the paragraph. Consider putting the bad news in a subordinate clause (begin with words like although, because, since, if, etc) Depersonalize bad news by using passive voice. Chance to repair any damaged good will so business can continue. Use direct strategy when: you know the reader well, reader may overlook the bad news, org suggests policy directness.
