The context in which you are communicating affects various dimensions of writing: Rules and regulations around communications procedures: genres. Formal business reports, sale pitches, social media posts are also genres. Genre allows us to conform to a standard style. Genres often adhere to formulaic styles that guide us through the writing process: discourse communities. A discourse community is a group of communicators who share a goal (i. e. , a sales team) Understanding what the shared and unshared goals of the community are will help you communicate better. Sometimes you are writing to people who share your goals, sometimes they are your opposition: rhetoric situation. Rhetoric is persuasive language that is used to evoke a specific response. Three components of the rhetorical situation: exigence (the reason for writing, audience, constraints (limits to what can be said and the nature of the message, i. e. , genre) It has a point to make: audience focus.
