The female nude has been material for male artists throughout the tradition of western art since the renaissance. Sherrie levine did a body of work which consisted of simply re- photographing original master"s works of art. It is a critique of the status of certain figures, especially male (as they were almost always male) that are considered the famous masters" of photography. As post-modernist art, it examines the idea of authenticity, and the original, over the copy.
