CPS 118 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Interpreted Language, Matlab, Binary System
Document Summary
Computers are electronic systems that can transmit, store, and manipulate information (data) It can be numeric, character, graphic and sound. The two most important are character and numeric for beginner programmers. To manipulate data, a computer needs a set of instructions called a program. An algorithm is a series of instructions on how to solve the problem. The order of execution of operations must be correct. The operations must be things that are feasible. They must produce a result and stop in a finite amount of times. A simple algorithm is : add dry ingredients, mix, add water, knead, bake. Once an algorithm is created, you no longer need to understand the principles on which it is based. Algorithms allow you to share expertise with others. Once you have encoded the necessary intelligence to solve a problem in an algorithm, many people can use your algorithm without being experts on what surrounds the basis of your algorithm.
