Document Summary

State machines: consists of states and the transitions between states. Activity diagrams are a more sophisticated way of describing behaviour, and a high level representation compared to state diagrams - they look more at work flow and the interactions between objects than state diagrams. State diagrams just look at one object or program, not the interactions between programs. Sequence diagrams show how instances interact, but say nothing about the internal actions of each instance. The state machine diagram is one way of showing internal processing. Initial state: green circle, where the state machine starts. Final state: red circle, where the state machine terminates. Label: placed on the transitions between states, format: trigger [condition] action. Trigger: the event that causes the transition to occur - in this case, clicking a mouse button. Condition: must be true when the transition is followed. In the example, the control key must be pressed when the transition occurs.
