Africans and indigenous people underwent slavery whereas europeans (including. Portuguese), chinese and indians were subject to indentureship. Indentureship was a contract of labour servitude (3-5 years) during which the person was under the control and authority of a master. Slave status passed from mother to daughter; indentureship was not. Slaves were like chattel (owned); indentured labourers were seen as human beings (albeit inferior) Slaves did not receive and pay (with exception of some) while indentured labourers received a small wage.
