Started by massedus church, publishing operation in 1829. Published under the name of the individual person held position called book steward . They didn"t have publisher title at the time. Best known book steward was william briggs. 1879 the methodist book publishing house elected briggs steward. Number of british/american works rose dramatically when the copyright laws were being clarified. Firm also entered school textbook market and became an active job. Oversaw significant increase in # of canadian publishing. Some were about religion but new subject areas were introduced. Trained entire new generation of publishers in his house. Published a number of bestseller that sold well. Sale of foreign books were represented in canada. Every editor had to be a methodist editor. Samuel follows decided to create a standard, named ryerson press. Educational books, literary works using profits of educational books. During that period (1920-1960) it was arguably english canada"s influential period. Coming of age up until quiet revolution.
