Prisons as a snapshot of social problems: Protecting society, punishing those who are antisocial/deviant, or helping to fix their problems. Changed during the enlightenment (rethinking of human nature) People could be reformed and become productive people. People engaged in criminal behaviour because their lives were chaotic. Give them a peaceful and quiet place would help them. Lock-up: a place to separate offenders from general population. Auburn model communal work and meals. Guard tower in centre, could keep eyes on whole institution because of circular shape.
