Document Summary
Defining domestic violence (nov 16) policing domestic violence. A gender neutral term, but one that is commonly associated with violence against women in the home and at the hand of their male intimate partners; Some associate with violence at a domestic sphere (child abuse, elderly abuse) A number of terms often used interchangeably by researchers and practitioners: violence against women (vaw); intimate partner violence (ipv); intimate partner homicide (iph); domestic violence (dv); spousal violence (sv); Imperative that we be clear: our focus is on intimate partner violence in the home. What we know about ipv: prevalence & severity. Asked if people were victimized but not how they were victimized. Examined quantity of violence, not quality of violence. Women are subjected to more severe forms of ipv than are men. Men usually face verbal abuse, slapping, having things thrown at them. Women three times more likely than men to report being beaten, choked, threatened with a gun/knife, sexually assaulted.
