Important part of the justice system (custody and sentencing was where the action was) Symbolic function (for both youth and adults) Supposed to reaffirm the norms and values of society (attempt to denounce appropriate youth criminal behaviour) If a case gets all the way into the court and in front of a judge, less intrusive measures include; Reprimand stern lecture or warning from the judge in minor cases. Intensive support and supervision order closer monitoring and more support than a probation order. Attendance order requires young person to attend a program at specified times and on conditions set by the judge (examples may include anger management) Deffered custody & supervision order if young person likely sentences to custody may serve in community under conditions (not for violent) Intensive rehabilitative custody and supervision order sentence for serious violent offenders. *ycja is very flexible and attempt to defer youths who do not commit violent crimes*
