Gentrification defined: the movement of middle-class households into lower-income, inner-city neighbourhoods. Gentrification involves the transformation of housing stock through renovation and/or redevelopment (residential gentrification). Good for those who stay in the neighbourhood and who can afford those houses. It can also have negative effects on those who were there first- displacement as rent and housing prices go up. Soon they are no longer able to afford living there- displaced: commercial gentrification (starbucks) Very much related to residential gentrification- changes in the businesses in the area. A coffee time is replaced with a starbucks- a diner replaced with a tapas bar. Businesses change to cater to the new residents. Residential gentrification starts first, and then business follows. However, business can come first, and then followed by residential (parkdale) affluent mental health institutional patients released = higher crime rates .
