INTERNATIONAL GOVERNANCE
No World Government
-No single international body of government has exclusive global jurisdi
ction over domestic affairs of every country
-International Organizations are derived from existing countries
No world police force
-Law enforcement is still domestic responsibility
SOVEREIGNTY
Key principle of International Law
Each state has exclusive control over domestic affairs
States agree to international law thorugh international agreement:
-Conventions/Treaties
-Bilateral or Multilateral
-Customary Principles
-Longstanding legal traditions and practices community held
INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL LAW
Anything that violates intrnational criminal law is an "int'l crime"
Two types of international criminal law:
Core crimes that are relevant to international courts
-international crime
-Crimes against humanity, war crimes, aggression, genoci
de
Crimes of international concern based on multilateral agreement
-transnational crime
-treaties which call for domestic criminalization of certain tra
nsnational acitivity
INTERNATIONAL COURTS AND TRIBUNALS
Courts that function independent of any national government
Do not apply particular state laws rather base judgements upon international leg
al system

TYPES OF INTERNATIONAL COURTS
Four major categories of international courts:
-Int'l courts that handle conflict between states
-Int'l criminal courts/tribunals that prosecute individual defendents fo
r alleged int'l crimes
-internationalized courts (international court but use domestic system a
s well)
-Non-criminal commissions

-Located in The Hague, Netherlands
-created in 1998
-established by the Rome Treaty
