Cause of crime: tempted by or possessed by the devil. Note connections between religions and legal/political authority. New ideas about evidence in criminal trials. New ideas about government: the social contract. Criticism of unfair processes and harsh punishments fewer capital offences, development of prisons, transportation. People started thinking government was supposed to respond to the people and if they didn"t listen, they changed the government forcefully. Changed the nature of the criminal trial. No longer accepted that kings were allowed to be tyrants. If the king wasn"t being fair, people would want to overthrow him. Shifts in the cjs, making fewer crimes, death penalty offences, isn"t used anymore for less serious offences. Development of prisons, and transportation (sending people to other places instead of executing them) A harsh system was no longer seen as fair.
