CRM 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Positive Form, Anomie, Conflict Theories
Document Summary
Durkheim: anomie: shared consensus, shared value system, when the system breaks down there is anomie (normlessness) which will lead to crime, delinquency and bad behaviour in general. Conflict about what we are arguing about. Religious beliefs, wealth, status, class and other value systems. Look at the processes that tie individuals to communities and social norms. Ask why we don"t all commit crimes. Durkheim: if rules are weak &/or there is little agreement about their legitimacy, deviance will be common. Thrasher and shaw both look at ideas tied to a core value. Shaw and mckay: ecological analysis shows consistent crime rates for neighbourhoods despite changing demographics: it"s not about the people living there it is the area, high population areas. Don"t have clearly defined shared norms or widely accepted norms leading to normlessness. Delinquency is not caused; it is prevented by the presence of controls.
