What is child and youth care: based on experience, based on where you work, definitions will vary depending who you talk to. Core characteristics of child and youth care: passion, caring, the milieu, competence and strengths, space and time, experiential. Historical perspectives: professional caregiving emerged as western societal response for dealing with abnormal children, since 16th century, been concerned how we respond to the problems of the youth, professional helpers, controlling young people and making them conform. Key influences on the evolution of cyc (and other social services: government jurisdictions, research, theory, culture. Individualism: equality and democracy, christianity and the church, rational and scientific thought. History of residential services: can be organized into 7 eras from pre- and post-wwii, moralistic (1700s to mid 1800s) reformation-rescue (mid 1800s to early 1900s) Normalization & professionalization (mid 1970s to 1990s) quality of care (1990s to present) Jean-jacques rousseau- children are inherently bad so they need to be punished.
