Prior to 18thc, child bearing and child rearing were dangerous. Parents grew empathy for children which produced child-oriented families in the first half of 20thc. Children of the poor and immigrants were the primary targets of child-saving. Until 19thc, children were valued for their economic contribution. Science -> proves the impact of physical abuse, use of birth control. Psychologists -> guidelines for child care and discipline, measures of child characteristics and prescriptions for child disorders and family living. Social workers -> child-saving movements to improve health and welfare and end abuse and neglect. Education -> promoted recognition of children as a separate class. Prior to 18th c, common law in england and us paid little attention to children. There were laws in the first half of 20th c to control the parents who were abusive to children, but the system gave little attention to the child"s perspective. Moved from viewing children"s rights as anathemas .
