Rooting mental health in an aboriginal world view. A consequence of colonization is that knowledge systems around mental heath were disregarded by western cultures; no agreement on culturally appropriate practice. Aboriginals believe that ancestors passed down knowledge, old-time practices, natural practices, balance between physical/emotional/cognitive (whole person treatment) In western culture professionals only treat certain parts of the problem; specialized. To aboriginals, mental health is linked to physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual well-being. The (cid:862)right thi(cid:374)g(cid:863) to do is usually (cid:271)ased o(cid:374) wester(cid:374) (cid:449)orld(cid:448)ie(cid:449)s; increase oppression. Principles to base more effective health care for aboriginal children include self- determination (right to make own decisions), intergenerational (community member involvement), non-discrimination, holism (balance), respect for culture/language, and shared responsibility for death. The vision of urie brofenbrenner: adults who are crazy about kids. Created the new field of study of the ecology of human development.
