Document Summary
Cyc 802: incident response for children and youth. Attitude: secondary trauma is an occupational hazard of the work. Skills: develop skills to minimize the impact of the work on our lives, e. g. debrief after hours with coworkers, supervisors etc. Knowledge: ways to minimize the negative impact. Insufficient recovery time trauma: no time to heal or get distance from children stories. We bring our self to our work: contributing factors, personality and coping styles, social support systems, positive support, negative support, personal history, personal issues, not enough training, current life context, must be capable of dealing with own issues. Personal is professional: unresolved issues from (cid:449)orker"s personal history can, source of information. Increase empathy: over-relating to client, cause (cid:449)orker to (cid:271)e less se(cid:374)siti(cid:448)e to the (cid:272)hild"s e(cid:454)perie(cid:374)(cid:272)e. Counter-transference: sympathizing rather then empathizing, seek counselling and support, seek supervision, must be able to identify and understand transference & counter-transference.
