EID 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Ada Lovelace, Google Analytics, Yottabyte
Recap
Binary
- something that can be turned off or non
- Adding an extra bit multiply by 2
- 2^3 = 8
Ada Lovelace
- First programmer
- Found that the formula could solve multiple equations and tasks
Variable
- Algebra
- Store something in a character and recall and iterate upon it
- X + 1 = 2
o X + 2 = 3
HTML, CSS, JS
- Html describes content
- CSS makes it look
- JS – interactions it take place (a preloader leading to a page)
o Hovering over a button, the button lights up etc.
Semantics is language that describes content
Analysis
- Detailed examination of the elements or structure of something, typically as a basis for
discussion or interpretation
Analytics
- The science and use of analysis
- Google Analytics used to implement analysis
Big Data
- Yale Library in 2040 will have approximately 200-million volumes
o Thought of physical volumes back in 1944
o But phsial spaes do’t sale ell
- When you digitize something, the amount of space is minute
o Now its scalable and you can store more content

Parkiso’s First La, Data epads to fill aailale spae
- Storage costs decreases + compression increases = more for less
- Object to object (020) and internet of things (IoT)
o Machine coming online to create information in the form of sensors and collect
how many hours a projector is used every month and make decisions on how
many bulbs should be added
o System of systems as well
- MB datasets → GB datasets → TB datasets → Zeta
Infographic of a Yottabyte
- Google, Facebook have decentralised exabytes
BIG DATA: 3 V’s
- Volume, velocity and variety constitute big data
- If I have a petabyte of customer data, theres a lot of volume, and it doubles every year so
you have velocity
o When you have data from different sources coming together what are issues?
▪ They may not be compatible (linux, mac, and windows) because they
came from different sources and are formatted in different ways
• Need to massage information and data
• Problem by sorting by date?
o It changes as you modify the file
BIG DATA infographic
#Panamapapers
- move money outside country so they would not pay taxes from those that are wealthy
- Mom = the government in Panamapaper videos
Why are the Panama Papers a big data problem?
- Size of data breach is a volume breach
o The more clues you follow, the greater the data will expand
- If you find a right shade of lipstick, many women would wear it and find data for
geolocation, look at camera footage, conduct interviews
o All this is adding data
- If you have >1 tb of data, each document is a clue you have to follow and it becomes
exponential in terms of volume
- Variety of data
o Associate shell companies with main companies
▪ Shell are connected to lawyer etc.
