DST 500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Psy, Alprazolam, Art Therapy
Document Summary
Week seven - (un)expected art institutions: historicizing art therapy. Mad art is art made by or about people with mad experiences. Must historicize the relevance of art therapy. Developing a critique of outsider art and art groups. Politicizing mad art - looking at it as largely existing in a way that has a parallel with mental health literacy. Will also look at how art can attribute to a counter hegemonic reality. Art can create accessibility when it comes to intersectionality; power of art lies within its power to evoke meaning and create change. All art is political; not all art is counter hegemonic. Leah lakshmi piepzna-samarasinha - queer, sick, and disabled non binary femme writer and cultural worker of burger/tamil sri lankan and irish/roma ascent. Speaks back to the things that society thinks is acceptable to hold us (eg. cane, cigarette, xanax, etc. ) Saying this poem can be accessed in many ways (inclusivity)
