CLD 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, Assisted Reproductive Technology, Artificial Insemination
Document Summary
Process by which sperm and ovum combine to create a single cell called a zygote. Zygote: duplicates itself repeatedly by cell division to produce all the cells that make up a baby. Men: several hundred million sperm are produced in the testicles each day. Women: have about 2 million immature ova in their ovaries at birth, each contained in a follicle, ovulation occurs about once every 28 days until menopause. After being expelled from the ovary, the ovum is swept through the fallopian tube toward the uterus. Sperm enter the vagina through ejaculation and travel through the cervix. Fertilization takes place in the fallopian tubes. Men: low sperm count, insufficiently motile sperm, genetic. Women: failure to produce eggs/ova/normal ova, mucus in the cervix. Disease in the uterine lining, blockage of the fallopian tubes. Roughly 16% (or 1 in 6) couples in canada experience infertility this number has doubled since the (cid:1005)(cid:1013)(cid:1012)(cid:1004)"s.
