Church against practice of magic and condemned those that practiced magic (witchcraft) church equated magic with the devil/evil. In europe over 100000 mostly women had been executed for witchcraft. Back then you did not need to provide evidence you called parish said you think someone you disliked you accused of witchcraft, and therefore they would be executed. Samuel parris came to salem and spearheaded a new church.
