Document Summary

Rationality: the consumer can compare any two bundles. Any bundle is at least as good as itself. If a bundle is better than a second one and the second bundle is better than a third bundle then the first bundle is better than the third bundle. Convexity: if a consumer is indifferent between two bundles then any weighted average of the two bundles is at least as good as the original bundles. Some things to remember about utility maximization problem. A utility function assigns numbers to each commodity bundle in such a way that more preferred bundles are assigned higher numbers than less preferred bundles. (ranking of bundles) Preference which satisfies rationality + continuity -->utility representation. Utility function form is not unique in terms of presenting some preference. See lecture notes where we discussed monotonic transformation . The main idea is that an increasing transformation will leave the ranking of any pair of bundles unchanged.
