Poetic device in which a single word or expression signify. The lyric is a short poem usually delivered in the voice of a single speaker (cid:523)(cid:498))(cid:499)(cid:524). (cid:498))(cid:499) is the speaker, not the author. 3 main categories of poetry: lyric, narrative, dramatic. Narrative poems try to tell a story (ex a ballet) and a lyric poem is an expression of the person"s feelings. )t doesn"t try to tell about the event but rather tries to be the event (and embody it in some way) Content + form = meaning (p i e) Fixed forms: poems written according to strict guidelines or templates, which typically have names. Iambic pentameter: 10 syllables/5 beats per line, the rhythm in each line sounds like: ba-bum / ba-bum / ba-bum / ba-bum / ba-bum, two kinds of sonnets: petrarchan and shakespearean. 4 parts: 3 quatrains, 1 couplet rhymes abab cdcd efef gg. 2 parts: octave (lines 1-8) and sestet (lines 9-14)
