Document Summary

Pop lit reuses and recycles typical character tropes, stock characters, stories. Critics of mass culture argue that it debases the value of art. Pop culture cannot be understood in terms of individual texts. Consumers: people are not seen as participants in the society but rather consumers of what others produce. Corruption of feelings: media exploits rather than satisfy our needs and desires; worst instincts are appealed to and best instincts are distorted. Flatters mediocracy: genre writing; makes the average person think they"re smart by addressing common tropes in these genres. Break from the past: destroys folk art, dehydrates popular art and threatens fine art; obsession with fashion and novelty. Folk art survives but in a debased way. Pseudo-world: mass culture defines our sense of reality and organise our experiences by stereotypes. Story written in song form, story to the audience when performed. Narrator who gives a chronicle of the culture of the people.
