Agatha chirstie books are criticized as being ingenious puzzles, but they are novels, which means they include: Characters with a relation to (english) society. Invitation to readers to be concerned about the fate of these characters to evaluate their remarks and actions (morally, politically, socially and in terms of personal consistency) Trying to keep up to date (especially with youth) Depicting the changing lives of girls and women in her stories. Depicting (in poirot and miss marple) the place of outsiders in a tightly contained and regulated english community. Irony in a murder is announced: all the apparent comedy and distrust of foreigners surround rudi scherz and mitzi, the real villain in the piece is as english a piece of stilton. Early work was heavily indebted to conan doyle (and other detective authors) Poirot (like holmes) observes the crime scene in minute detail and observes where others merely just see.
