Communities are really fictional, no fixed identity, they have been constructed. We create identities through quintessential canadian experience, taming the wilderness, part of the fiction we tell ourselves, distinguishing ourselves from the usa. When we look at immigrant literature, it is a body of work that is part of a bigger body. Canada has always had an identity crisis, 2 solitudes, British and french, then in the 1980s, reinvention through multiculturalism. Finding yourself physically and geographically in the new landscape (inhospitable landscape, back then, iconic picture, and find your place in it) Very specific, small area that brings him through many experiences of canadian life. Protagonist, hostile environment, unknown and unfamiliar, also socially because he is unknown and unfamiliar to those he meets. Making it hospitable to himself, push factors (economic migration) better oneself and one"s family, find a material advancement. Must own a piece of canada , establishing diaspora, setting roots, creating a home, sense of belonging.
