Aims to cure people of mental disorders by investigating the relationship between the conscious and unconscious parts of the mind. Specific type of therapy, conducted by talking to them. Many of his patients were women, diagnosed with hysteria. Idea of bringing up unconscious, hidden thoughts and represses memories originated with him: which was at the time treated with barbaric methods. Inaccessible, we only have access to conscious material. Conscious materials (thoughts, ideas, memories, etc. ) pushed into unconscious. Free association can bring back these materials: freud had initially tried to do this through hypnosis. Repressed material often returned as symptoms; psychosomatic, neurotic fears, panic attacks, nervous ticks. Repression is not a bad thing; for freud it was necessary to survive in society, stopped impulsive negative actions. Resistance of rediscovery of repressed materials is a defence mechanism. Repressed material is promoted into something more socially acceptable. Aggressive impulses, join the army to put it to a good cause.
