Topic 9 evaluation of malfunctioning ss, remedial work & change of use. Locate the source of the odor foul odours generated by a private ss may be indicative of any 1 or more of several problems. From lb examine the surface of the lb for effluent breakout if this is the source of the odour, although it may be the source, it could also reveal a more serious problem w/ entire ss. In the tu/tank, gas generated by the anaerobic decomposition of sanitary sewage could be the source of a foul odor. Gases are usually vented through the plumbing stack of the building where the ss is generated & are then dissipated into the air. If plumbing vents are not installed, an odour could be present outside a bulding; plumber should investigate problem. If tu/tank is not properly covered or sealed, the gases generated in the tank could escape causing an odour.
