Determinants: any factor, whether event, characteristic, or other definable entity, that brings about a change in a health condition or other defined characteristic. Health-related states or events: communicable disease, chronic disease, injuries, birth defects, occupational health, environmental health, behaviours, genetic markers. The constant presence of a disease or infectious agent within a given geographic area or population group. The occurrence of more cases of disease than expected in a given area or among a specific group of people over a particular period of time. Sometimes the preferred word, as it may escape sensationalism associated with the word epidemic. An epidemic occurring over a very wide area (several countries or continents) and usually affecting a large proportion of the population.
