Pathogens cause the formaion of pus, which builds up pressure against the eardrum and causes is to become inlamed and painful. Caused by bacteria (most common is s. pneumonia) Other bacteria frequently involved are nonencapsulated h. inluenzae, s. pyrogenes, s. aureus. Someimes the bacteria cannot be detected (3-5% of cases) Conjugate vaccine exists and intended to prevent pneumonia cause by s. pneumoniae. About 50% of all colds are caused by rhinoviruses. Most of the ime, no causaive agent can be ideniied. Immuniies accumulate against cold viruses during our lifeime. Immunity is based on the raio of iga anibodies to single serotypes. Isolated populaions develop group immunity, unil a new virus gets introduced. More than 200 agents cause the common cold. Vaccine efecive against so many diferent pathogens is not that possible. Infecion can be spread from throat to the sinuses, lower resp system, middle ear, complicaion of laryngiis and oiis media.
