Description
Post-Impressionism and the late Nineteenth-Century (Adams Chapter 23) • ‘Post-Impressionism’ = a broad range of artistic approaches • all were influenced by impressionism, however • Similar to Impressionists, Post-Impressionists were drawn to bright colours and distinctive and visible brushwork (yet this was distinct in terms of individual artists’ approaches) • what was different, was the more pronounced use of form and line to distinguish objects • Post-Impressionists were also influential was the symbolist movement Two broadly defined trends within Post-Impressionism: 1) Technical concerns: Cezanne and Seurat 2) Emotional themes/content: van Gogh and Gauguin (influenced more by Symbolism and psychological content)
