Post-Impressionism and the
late Nineteenth-Century
(Adams Chapter 23)
Post-Impressionism = a broad range of artistic
approaches
all were influenced by impressionism, however
Similar to Impressionists, Post-Impressionists were
drawn to bright colours and distinctive and visible
brushwork (yet this was distinct in terms of individual
artists approaches)
what was different, was the more pronounced use of
form and line to distinguish objects
Post-Impressionists were also influential was the
symbolist movement
Two broadly defined trends within Post-Impressionism:
1) Technical concerns: Cezanne and Seurat
2) Emotional themes/content: van Gogh and Gauguin
(influenced more by Symbolism and
psychological content)
