Range of human hearing is 20 hz to 20000 hz (20 khz) Dynamic microphone - diaphragm attached to coil of wire that moves within magnetic field of a permanent magnet. Condenser microphone - pair of metal plates placed close together, carry static charge when electrical charge is induced. Sound waves generate vibrations in one flexible diaphragm plate, which causes small change in otherwise fixed voltage on the plates. Change in voltage is representatives of the sound waves. Ribbon microphone - thin metallic ribbon suspended in the field of a magnet. Ends of the vibrating ribbon a small electrical signal is generated. Omnidirectional - equal output or sensitivity at all angles. Picks up max amount of ambient sound. Should be placed very close to sound source. Unidirectional - is most sensitive to sound arriving from one particular direction. Picks up only around as much ambient sound as omnidirectional. Bidirectional - has max sensitivity at front and back.
