GCM 746 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Greenwashing, Natural Resource, Incineration
Document Summary
Life cycle thinking and the use of life cycle tools and information are necessary to inform any sustainability strategy. They are increasingly used to inform packaging design at every stage from the component to the packaging system level. Life cycle thinking should be applied in all stages of the product and packaging design process. Lca is a formal, quantitative method to assess the environmental impacts of a product, process, or system. The process of collecting the data, and the results themselves can improve decision-making and performance: Improves decision-making in areas like material selection, process selection, procurement, and investment strategies. To confirm whether changes will lead to improvements, or whether impacts will just be shifted to other life cycle stages (burden shifting) Useful for data-based decisions, rather than emotional appeals: intuition often fails since the entire product/process life cycle is not considered. But how do you know whether to invest in better packaging or switch to a more local supplier? .
