Obligatory time- used to do necessary things such as eating, personal hygiene , sleeping and working (mandatory things) Discretionary time- used for things which you can choose to do or not to do, such as recreational activities. (like painting over studying for this final!) Obligatory and discretionary time change over historical time and over the life cycle. Workweek length generally today is between 35 -48 hours. But as economic conditions change: workweek and workday getting longer, vacation lengths getting shorter. Serial careers, contract work and multiple jobs becoming the norm. Space controls what we can do through the friction of distance as manifests in distance decay. Time controls what we do through direction and quantity. Direction: called the arrow of time you can only move forward. Quantity : the same for all you cannot buy time no matter what. While time has only one direction, different cultures think time has an orientation.
