Ecosystem Approach – ultimate in thinking sustainability (ideal decision making model)
Canadian – geography relatively small population; need top down with policies; bottom-up
community stapled; diversity of stakeholders
Acquire transparency and accountability
Used for environmental management and planning
GPI include GDP – include them but also question them
Four major elements taking into account
oKnowledge
of the physical environment and human society including
Different knowledge systems
oWestern science – AI, weak sustainability, too much rely on
technology
oLocal knowledge – knowledge gained by living or working in an
environment ( resources extractions) (fishers, farmers)
oTradition ecological knowledge (TEK)- first nations; have
spiritual aspect; generational aspect; narrative rather written;
qualitative rather than quantitative; reliable
In pretty much every environmental assessment
language, it’s required that the proponent that wants to
go to do a project must include TEK as part of their
ecological process
Incredibly sound way in terms of how the environment
work
Important – for make stories, parable for caution and
rules
Example: World wildlife fund – Nunavut - polar bear are
endangered; TEK says no; first nations are correct
Example: Ryerson – Nunavut – ask hunters where
caribou were; TEK there are caribou; western science
says there are no
The concept of scarcity

If we have respect who have the knowledge, then they must know what they
are doing
Have to question anything
oConnectivity
The complexity and interrelationships of human-environment
Everything is connected to everything else
Everything we do is going to impact the global ecosystem and the local
ecosystem
oUncertainty
About natural systems and the evolution of environment, economy and society
You will never know everything
Too complex
Accept uncertainty
Redemptive technology – know uncertainty; know possible environmental
damage; least you can do is postpone, be careful or get beyond the point where
you cannot redo what you are doing
oStakeholders
Recognizing and incorporating the range of interests and concerns when making
resource decisions
Bring all of the frame into one process
Anyone who has a stake on whatever that’s being decided
Have to be identified, and brought to the table
Difficulty: collecting knowledge, disagreements, getting stakeholders in the same place
Important top-down – identify stakeholders, organize meetings, give the structure, to push the
decision making process
Managing uncertainties
oAssess the factors necessary to maintain biodiversity, ecological integrity and health by:
Creating accurate inventories and developing indicators
Assessing ecosystem resiliency and vulnerability
Monitoring over time (to determine carrying capacities) and over the long term
