• Goods and services meant to be sold to other members of that community
• Non enclave economy
• Mixed economy
• Both enclave and non enclave economy
• Also known as integrated economy
• Chinese economy is mixed economy
Chinese Settlement Patterns
• From chinatown to ethnoburbs
• Before spadina/dundas chinese lived near city hall (they had to move because of
city hall construction)
• Came to canada same time as italians
• Before point system (1967), only europeans could immigrate, however others
could come as labourers (chinese and railroad)
Chinese Business Development Path in Toronto
• Enclave component:
• 1) multiple locations
• 2) indoor malls (pacific mall)
• 3) chinatown
• Integrated component:
• 1) diverse business
• 2) expanding
• 3) multiple locations (spaces everywhere in the city not just where the
chinese live)
• 4) integrated with the general economy
