The main phases of structural change can be identified, triggered by technological (especially transportation) , social and economic change: The pedestrian city, with its compact localized urban structure embedded in a predominantly rural landscape. Reasonably compact and selfcontained structure govvemenret by foot distances. The metropolitan city, the growth of which was triggered predominantly by the development of public transportation. Expansion of form as populations grow and streetcars allow limited deconcentration. The megalapolitan city, with growth and form triggered by the development of the automobile. Residential infilling of area between streetcar spoke as still growing population increasingly uses car to increase mobility. Concentric zone model (read the chart in textbook) Burgess model, 1925: central business district (cbd, wholesale, light manufacturing, lower-class residential, medium-class residential, higher-class residential, heavy manufacturing, outlying business district, residential suburb industrial.
