Case: How technology can help nations navigate the difficult path to food sovereignty
1. As more people move abroad to different countries, there is an increase in multicultural
societies around the world. People tend to find comfort eating their culturally appropriate food
because it reflects their culture’s norms, beliefs values, and preferences. Migration has also
impacted the locals; by including other food traditions in their own cuisine, people are able to
explore and learn from other cultures. Behind every plate of food comes tradition, history, and
cultural norms. Foreign foods can enrich a country, for instance by introducing new foods and all
of the culture that comes with it. As mentioned in the case, the inclusion of channa and chapati in
Nairobi’s diet is a result of the Indians trading and settling in the region. The introduction and
implementation of new culture’s foods does come with some challenges, such as making sure
food is appropriately labelled - as organic, local, kosher or halal. The critical part of this is the
authenticity of the certification process. For instance, Jewish people eat kosher and Muslims eat
halal because of their religious values.
2. With new technologies such as blockchain, I think that crypto-labelling will be
incredibly effective in promoting traceability and foods sovereignty in Canada. If consumers
purchase directly from farmers or through community shared agriculture, local production
guarantees food safety and ensures food sovereignty. However, when food is imported into the
