Document Summary

Soc 103 week 7 - the state and its role in capitalism. Naiman 2012, p. 165 - an organized political structure that carries out tasks required by more complex societies as their population and geographic size increase, as warfare and trade expand, and as social inequalities become more extreme . Governing, regulating, managing, social control, sovereignty over state. From a critical marxist perspective: not just organization, also social control. Feudalism: ruling class controlled economic activity as well as military / legal / admin / etc. Power was centralized if you have one, you had them all. The economic class privately owns and (increasingly) controls economic activity. A class of people are in control of the economic sphere (the wealthy, the 1%, who privately own). The state is collectively the government, military, police, and judiciary. In some ways they are separate, in other ways they are collective. And the state is responsible for the repercussions of private economic activity.
