th Typography (September 11 , 2013) Terminology: serif faces – has a somewhat decorative terminal sans serif faces – is missing decorative terminals terminal – where a letter ends at the bottom baseline – the line text sits on - types with serif are easy to read for large bodies of text (serifs provide actual lines to help the letters flow together) - modern typefaces are normally sans serif *in magazines today, if they are using sans serif typefaces, the graphic designer must increase spacing to create a baseline* Typographic Measurement Systems: - refer to width and height second (ex. paper is 8 ½” by 11”) Picas, Points and Agates (on exam): |------------| 2.54 cm 1 inch 72 points 6 picas - agates can be defined as 14 per 4 column inch ex. 10 inches = 60 picas 144 points = 2 inches 3.5 inches = 21 picas 3.5 inches = 252 points - horizontal measure in picas and vertical in points (ex. 65 picas wide by 297 points high) *when doing layout, do not do more than a 1 point rule around text* *12 pts in a pica*
