GCM 240 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Xerography, Inkjet Printing, Toner
Document Summary
Inkjet inks are proprietary formulations: each manufacturer highly protects their own formulas. Dyes fade easily so we use pigments when fade resistance and image permanence is a priority. Solvent must be slow drying enough so it does not dry in the nozzle. Inkjet is good on printing on a wide variety of substrates. Must work on a variety of substrates. Uv curable inkjet inks (becoming more popular: especially in grand format. Hot melt inkjet inks are solid at room temperature and heated to liquefy prior to application. Are pigment particles contained in a bead of plastic. Does not result in good colour (usually used for b&w: if good colour is needed, use inkjet. Additives are added to the toner to improve static charge, flow, and reduce clumping. Particle size: 5-30 um: smaller particles results in better print quality but is more expensive and cause dusting problems. Cost and transparency of pigments can be a problem.
