GRA 530 Week 10 October 29, 2013 ­people need to organize their business ­need to know who you work with  ­most projects are about making money project management institute (PMI) ­ know your strengths and weaknesses the triple constraint ­cost/resource ­schedule/time ­scope/quality  ▯its all about trade­off ­contact your customers to see how you’re doing ­ most important is the date  example: need things to be done by December because that’s when people go on vacation ­ask sponsors ( what’s your most important constraint)  ▯this allows you to work properly ­what project management feels like ­ have to be able to learn how to adjust ­it’s dirty, and struggling ­not stable ­may be difficult to achieve ­make most decisions based on feelings ­have to know and own your feelings ­for experience you can just be part of the project management team, you don’t have to be there  for the entire process The bigbox project ­for invoicing errors you have to have everyone involved The project charter ­if you don’t have this then you don’t have a project ­can have many topics in this ­the purpose of the project ­what do you have to show for (deliverables)  ­scope: not just the goal, the things you will do and the things you wont do  ▯what happens when you don’t do this: you’re wasting time and money  ▯everyone influences the scope  ▯defining the scope and getting everyone’s’ signature  ▯so people know that they’re all on the  same page ­milestones: when will we hit our goals/deliverables?  ▯motivating factor ­assumptions: not going to pay on paper? What happens if you do ­I want that person and they’re only available for 3 months ▯ want to work around that ­have to have a team that has proper skills, need to work together, choosing the right people is  important ­sometimes you don’t get that choice ­sometimes you can’t get the best player on your team because the other departments may need  them too ­the charter is instrumental Tools and techniques Getting the right team ­meetings, minutes and accountability ▯ nything that gets written down gets recorded Risk assessment (high:7­9, medium: 4­6, low:1
