Lecture 8­week 10 Colour Management November 4, 2013 GRA ­533 Slide1 ­ Lecture 8­Colour Management ­a lot of industry leaders don’t understand this and thus need to know   ▯deal with images in colour and therefore need to know this Slide 3 – RGB and CMY(K) colour modes ­if you’re sending an image to a monitor­­. It needs RGB instructions ­the devices on the right use CMY ­and the devices on the left use RGB ­ can use different amounts to make colours • The screen, cameras, iPads are all devices work in RGB o Need RGB instructions • Can make any colour you like • Printers use CMY inks and toner Slide 4 – RGB Colour is “additive” Can shine these elements on or off (for monitor or television elements) ­RGB add together to make any other colour • Monitor of television elements o Loupe to old TV screens Slide 5­ RGB Colour is “additive” ­an old mac that uses RGB  ­3 signals – RGB ­ from far you don’t see the fosfers ­imaging devices use RGB system • RGB adds colour • Cause 3 phosphorus to glow • When you want black you turn all 3 colours off Slide 6­  CMY Colour is “Subtractive” CMY used for printing system ­because it absorbs colour and reflects ­can make any colour you like  ­the gamut for this is smaller ­ it absorbs two colours and reflects one Example: magenta and yellow absorb a colour and take away from the light it sees ­3 colours used to make all the other colours  ▯RGB and CMY use each other used similarly ­RBG are used to add colour and CMY (inks and toners)  ▯inks work by reflection and absorb the   colours ­K ▯ line for CMY, also used to make more Black  • Absorbs one of the colours and reflects the others • Inks work by reflection Slide 7 – different devices print differently… ­Why does the image print differently from different printers? ­each printer has the same printing system, different inks and paper  • Same images printed different colours on the same prints • Each printer has different inks, paper, colour gamuts, setups, software • If you want the same colour on different devices you want to alter the images appropriate for each device Slide 9­ The same pixel values  create different colours on different devices ­if you want the same colour on different devices you have to alter the pixel values ­example if one printer has a stronger yellow then you have to decrease it   ▯have to change the pixel value to print the same colour ­Different types of printing systems that you need to use  ­Understand how each other prints and then you change the pixel value Slide 10  ­CMY values don’t tell us what colour its’ going to be ­CMYK are just instructions that are put down ▯ they follow the instructions exactly but because  the printing system is different they print differently ­Where it’s printed it will be a different colour  ▯It could be any of the many colours • CMYK values don’t tell us what colour it is going to produce according to a printing system o Just instructions Slide 11 ­ICC profile contains corrections needed for the different printing processes ­Use a monitor profile that will change the colours appropriately ­System does it for you (alters pixel values appropriate for that device) • ICC profile contains corrections needed for the different printing pro
