European Social Structure
Identify: 3 social groups/orders/estates
Who: the clergy: secular & regular, the nobles, the commoners (2 types): peasants that rent
the land from the lord, and peasants that pay tithe-10% tax to the church

The European social structure is historically significant due to this structure defining the
society and expressing the important of status for the population at the time. It helps us
understand the views of the Europeans within the society, and how each group was
perceived, for example, knowing that the commoners meant the ordinary people, and that
they either rented land from the lord or paid tithe.
The Black Death
Identify: an event where about 25-50% of Europe’s population died
Who: Europeans
What: bacterial infection, bubonic/pneumonic plague
When: 1347-1350
Where: Europe
This event is historically significant due to marking a shocking event in history that affected
an abounding amount of the Europeans. The black death was a deadly epidemic that wiped
out many, and caused many other events leading to the deaths of Jews also which makes it
significant.
