Counter-revolution - napoleon & all that end of 18th c; Winds of change - blowing through americas. No social revolution - more of a reform movement. Agustin de iterbide - monarch of the empire of mexico (barely) Lasted a few months - cut short by military in the fall. 1823 - declared as independent of spanish rule. Ended with general porfirio diaz becoming president from 76-80 following military coupe. Diaz eventually wins 7 terms again gaining rule (1884-1910) Able to endure - his followers (technocrats) support him because he ensures continued dominance of landlords, supports military & church & ensures legislation passes to maximize investment opportunities fostering economic growth. Wins him considerable support among elite segment of population. However, this destroys the poor, as the rich only get richer. Challenged by francisco madero (run for presidency)
