Public school system going back to the 1830s, but many states didn"t make it compulsory. More likely to go if you"re in the north rather than south, white rather than black. By the end of the century most states had made attendance compulsory. Thousands of high schools and hundreds of libraries are built. By the end of the century >10% of americans were totally illiterate. Didn"t create the research university, that was done by germany: faculty is there to do new research and make progress. Oxford/cambridge were focused more on knowledge and you"d come out very well-rounded. In the late 19c, america imported the research-type of university. Robber barons and tycoons help fund the creation of new organizations. John d. rockefeller funded the university of chicago.
