Liberalism originates in the enlightenment, builds on the idea of political liberty late 18c - early 19c - develops as political/economic and later social philosophy idea of giving people of the state more of a political voice exists. Product of the enlightenment ; believes gov"t should be for the good of the people (rousseau, voltaire, montesquieu) wants to define/understand what the best interests of the people really are. * pain and pleasure principle (introduced in his book, released in 1789 when french revo. breaks out) * humans naturally attracted to that which gives them pleasure. * & naturally averse to things that bring us pain. * believes all gov"t should analyze whether their legislation(s) adhere to ppp. * then all society should be able to vote on the issuesdemocracy. * bentham calls this a mathematical equation (voting in favour/against legalization of something) * it has to be at least 51% for majority.
