The second significant thing in the john brown rebellion is now southern states expecting other rebellions and possibly slave uprisings like the one john brown attempted, start training their militia. This is the beginning of what will become the confederate army. Every southern slave states now begin seriously whipping its militia into shape. This includes arming them, training them, going through exercises. If you take collectively all the militias that slave states formed, they probably constituted between. It"s hard to say because they"re volunteers and are listed as those who actually show up when they"re needed. The union army, however, has only 16,000 troops. The confederate army as it stands in this point in time outnumbers the union army 100:16. On top of that, most of the union troops are stationed in places like california and arizona and a lot of them are fighting seminole indians in florida.
